Nagelsmann began his coaching career in the youth academy at Hoffenheim, and sooner than expected, he was handed the role of head coach at the age of just 28. At the time, Hoffenheim were in a relegation spot, yet he managed to guide them to safety. While that alone was impressive, what stood out even more was what happened the following season: with nearly the same squad, his training methods helped the team finish fourth in the Bundesliga — qualifying for the Champions League for the first time in the club’s history.
This success earned him a move to RB Leipzig, followed by a summer transfer to Bayern Munich, and eventually, the most prestigious job in German football: national team coach.
Nagelsmann is widely recognised for his innovative approach. For example, he installed a large screen beside the training pitch to immediately discuss on-field situations with his players. He also introduced a shot clock, forcing players to take a shot within a certain time limit — increasing game tempo and decision-making under pressure.
When you take a closer look at his coaching philosophy, you’ll notice that Nagelsmann is deeply focused on training the brain to improve cognitive speed. He was the first top-level coach I heard speak seriously about this. He constantly challenges players' brains in football-specific contexts to help create new neurological patterns, enabling them to solve situations more effectively during matches.
This book features a range of training exercises taken directly from Nagelsmann’s sessions, as well as drills inspired by his forward-thinking vision.
