Beckham wants to be big in U.S.

LONDON, England (Reuters) - Manchester United's David Beckham says he would love the challenge of making it big in the United States - but does not rule out a move to European champions Real Madrid.

Beckham, who has been linked with Real in recent weeks, fuelled further speculation with comments made before the two sides meet in their Champions League quarter-final second leg at Old Trafford tomorrow. Real won the first leg in Spain 3-1.

``As I've always said 'Never say never','' the England captain said in an interview with this week's European edition of Time magazine.

``You always want to play with the best team and the best players. In the last eight, nine years we've won most things in England, and the European Cup.

``Real Madrid have got a massive history about them and they've got world class players in their team,'' he added.

United have consistently denied receiving an approach and manager Alex Ferguson has laughed off transfer talk.

In the interview with Time, Beckham said he appreciated the attitude of Americans towards their sporting heroes and was amazed that soccer was not a major sport there.

``No other English footballer has every really made it big over there,'' Beckham said.

``I'd love to be well-known in America. I'd love to be recognised over there. The American people are so patriotic about their teams and their sports -- more so than anywhere else in the world.

LESS CRITICAL
``I like the way they look up to Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods. I'm sure they criticise players but not to the extent where they're putting their own people and their own stars down. That's what's nice.''

Before arriving at his present almost iconic status, Beckham was reviled by many English fans after he was sent off in a World Cup clash against Argentina in 1998. Many fans blamed his petulant kick on Argentina's Diego Simeone for England's defeat.

The American public will have the opportunity to see Beckham up close when United tour the U.S. in July, but the 27-year-old does not believe convincing them to like soccer will be easy.

``It will be hard. The American people love basketball, baseball, ice hockey and American football. Football isn't one of their major sports. I'm surprised because the facilities over in America are amazing and their women's team does really well.

``I don't see why in the future it can't change. Just another challenge for me, I think, to try to get noticed over there. It's going to be hard work but it will be nice to see what different countries think of me and my team-mates.''

Change the title to "Beckham begs for change" after his spat with the old man and his subsequent benching.

His comments indicate he has very little knowledge about sports fans here and only Michael's vast wealth and mighty spin control have kept him revered through a couple scandals. Lately it seems that fans love to see stars fall from grace, like Canseco under house arrest.

He is also white and male - an open season target in our society today. If he thought being called Mr. Posh Spice was bad in the UK, he better not come here. And Agoos was made a goat on by far the best USMNT in years.

MJ is a miracle and an amazing marketer. Only Pele compares in stature. Tiger's Dad must keep him under his thumb constantly. Even then, it's just a matter of time before scandal beaches his reign. It almost happened over his white girlfriends.

My thoughts - Beckham, wash and cut that mop on your head. Then stay home. You'll be riding the pine in Madrid and wouldn't look twice at MLS pay.

Unless Beck's can learn to catch/throw a pointy ball, or toss a ball into a little hoop, he doesn't stand a chance of becoming "big" in the US. The only soccer player who is "big" in the US is Pele.

You ask the average Joe on the street to name some soccer players and they'll say...."Ummmm Pele....and Ummmmm...that guy...you know...the one that scored the winning goal for the US in the World Cup. I forgot his name, but you know who I'm talking about. Oh, and the chick that took her shirt off."

Anyone in the US who knows soccer already knows Beckham, so there's really nothing he can do to become bigger. If he came to play in the MLS he might even lose popularity. his best bet os to go to Spain. At least that would boost is face time in Europe and South America...won't make a diff in the US.

If he doesn't want criticism, he better not try to make it in Boston...

Actually I would love to see Beckham in the US. His appeal to the 13-25 year old demographic would be HUGE. Forget the debate over whether he is a great or just a good one, he has an appeal that would put a lot of young people, along with their parents, in the parks.

I know MLS will never pony up the bucks to pay him what he could get in Spain or elsewhere, but what a great draw he would be. I recently took my 13 year old grandson to see "Bend it like Beckham." Even after having been on the screen for several weeks, the theatre was still half full of teenagers and I'll bet many of them were not soccer players. The girls were just nuts about him.

I know it will never happen but it would sure be fun to watch. Or maybe it would happen.......

Beckham is MAKING IT BIG in Japan as we speak. His dam poster is everywhere for Vodaphone and today at the convience store, I saw Beckham cookies and snacks. He hasn't even played here (outside of the WC) yet people love him. I don't get it.

I don't think he meant he would play for the US, I think he meant he would just like to be recognized and adored by fans from the US. Am I right?

Becks is bummed out because he didn't make the cut for a recent episode of the Simpson's where the Simpson visit the UK. Sky/Fox were going to ask him to appear, but then backed out because he wasn't famous enough in the USA.

Here's the article.

He will never be famous enough in the USA. Like I said earlier, all the people in the USA who might know Beckham, already know Beckham.

The average American can only name one soccer player...Pele.
